Evaluating Teaching: A Holistic Approach to Evaluating Scholarship of Teaching (CWAE/TLC Track Session)
Despite growing evidence of biases, student course evaluations are widely used to evaluate teaching effectiveness. In this hybrid session, two lightening presentations explore different teaching evaluation approaches, followed by an hour-long panel discussion. The panel features department heads and senior faculty with experience in both documenting and evaluating teaching performance. Key topics include (1) advantages and disadvantages of different teaching evaluation methods, (2) implementation challenges, (3) effectiveness of the methods at measuring teaching effectiveness and student learning, and (4) alternative methods as a replacement or complement for end-of-semester student evaluations.
