Will the classrooms be set up to enable hybrid instruction? Last year, many classrooms were missing key technology for this.
Tina Deemer
58:38
Some classrooms will have better tech for this than others. There are several that are being targeted this summer.

Can we get a copy of these slides, please? :)
Tina Deemer
59:45
They will be available.

The slides and recording will be available on https://provost.arizona.edu/content/pac and we will also email the slides to attendees after this meeting
Craig Aspinwall
01:02:02
If we aren't sure which classes will have students who need the online option, it will be hard to adjust to the available/better equipped classrooms, especially this late. It would be good to have the basic technology in all of the classrooms. For example, last year, many seemed to lack microphones for the online component of hybrid instruction.

Thank you for this information. Its very helpful. Questions: Faculty selected modality for fall ’21 with expectation that either vaccines would be required, or, the same safety practices would be in place, I.e., testing to be on campus, mask wearing, etc; now that safety measures cannot be required, what should we tell faculty who are asking to change modalities? In addition, will the university require faculty to live stream their in person classes?
Tina Deemer
01:03:42
@Craig, understood. There is certainly variability, but most classrooms have mics.

@Edella, no course modality changes can be made at this point. The department would need to seek approval from the Dean, and then from the Provost, to close the in-person section and to open a section in a different modality. Instructors who have health-related concerns should work with DRC and Human Resources.
Lisa Elfring | she/her
01:09:58
And no, there is absolutely no requirement that any course be live-streamed.

Thank you, Lisa. The faculty who are beginning to ask questions are those who are pregnant, or have small children at home, or are caregivers for elderly family members; I will tell them to reach out to DRC and HR

To Craig’s question, can this hotline be used to request upgrades for classrooms that may need additional support for remote students?
Tina Deemer
01:13:52
Yes, you can use that number to request upgrades for classrooms.
Tina Deemer
01:14:38
I can explain more about the classroom technology changes during Q&A if there is interest in that.

In music, we were effectively holding in-person lessons, classes, and ensemble rehearsals and performances throughout this past year as live in-person. We used very effective protocols based on the on-going research in the music field, which included masks, slit masks, instrument bell covers, 12-feet distance, and airflow exchange considerations as to length of rehearsals/lessons and breaks. Of course, we will abide by the requirements presented here, but research in our field still suggests 3 feet distancing and masks for inside lessons/rehearsals. Since singing and playing instruments remain in the “super spreader” category, is there anything we can do to beyond our more “normal” practices of space (acoustic properties, etc.) if we aren’t able to mandate masks or vaccinations? A number of our lessons are 1 hour in length and our ensemble rehearsals are 2-2.5 hours in length.

If an instructor of an in person class works with DRC to achieve accommodations for teaching is some other modality, do we need to change instructors or can we handle this in other ways?
Dawn Hunziker
01:22:42
@Craig - We would work with each instructor/class individually to determine the best solution for both the instructor and the student. Does this answer your question?
Michael Mckisson
01:24:01
With easier access to n95 and other high quality masks will there be any resources provided to purchase PPE for faculty?
Craig Aspinwall
01:24:22
@Dawn - Thanks! We're just getting a lot of questions from our faculty who may request DRC accommodations due to risk status. We just need to be able to plan for if those accommodations are granted. For example, if they are allowed to teach remotely, how do we notify students, etc.

Back to some of Lisa E.'s earlier info - is it acceptable for instructors of in person classes to do all office hours online this semester?
Tina Deemer

I believe the Provost has requested at least 50% of office hours in-person for an in-person course
