Good training for faculty meetings...?
Jeffrey Fehmi
01:00:12
Students often say they prefer lectures when I ask
Linda Pallock
01:01:52
Jeff, I think they say that because it is very passive and they don't have to do anything but show up
Byron Hempel
01:03:43
hah, what we want and what's good for us are often two very different things!
Dawn Gouge
01:04:24
Jeff, you could be a wonderful story teller and edutain
Jeffrey Fehmi
01:16:29
Could it be a pacing issue? she missed the first chance and then felt it passed her by?
Jim Hunt
01:34:21
Jeff this speaks to the idea off them wanting a lecture. They have the notion that they should be taught that way.
Netzin Steklis
01:47:18
We took data and adjusted our practice - have not finished analysis of last round because Covid needed our “experiment”. Let’s talk
Linda Pallock
01:50:45
Imposter syndrome?
Jim Hunt
01:51:18
Linda I that is what popped into my head along with learned helplessness
Jennifer Ravia
01:51:21
Yes, and also fear of reinforcing stereotype threat:(
Na Zuo
01:52:02
I googled impulse syndrome as Linda was typing... Not unique to student body then.
Netzin Steklis
01:54:11
How much of disengagement is due to exhaustion as the semester progresses ?
Na Zuo
01:54:37
Linda's comment on the slide reminds me of the Revise & Resubmit in publishing... ;)
Jeffrey Fehmi
01:55:03
I hope we get to hear potential ways how to fix some or all of these
Netzin Steklis
01:57:35
Perhaps expectations of college teaching/learning should be addressed in GenEd Refresh courses
Linda Pallock
01:57:46
I allow students to re-do some assignment and for the exam, they can get 1/2 points back for writing out why the answer they put was wrong and why the correct other is better. This way they have to go back to the content, yet can get points back.
Na Zuo
01:58:35
@ Netzin, I second that thought! Thinking about the same direction.
Na Zuo
02:00:04
That GenEd. could be a new entry for students to form or correct the college teaching misperception?
Jeffrey Fehmi
02:02:01
What are gen ed classes like these days? I have the uninformed idea that they are often big lectures
Byron Hempel
02:02:09
What I'm finding interesting recently is the juxtaposition of when I was a grad student 2 years ago and now as a teaching faculty. I'm finding that students viewed me as so much more approachable as a grad student compared to now. I don't believe I'm teaching any differently or have a different demeanor in the classroom.
Kayle Skorupski
02:02:39
Amazing how much a title change can impact how students see you Byron!
Alma Tejeda Padron
02:03:15
Hi Byron. I am totally agree with that.
Netzin Steklis
02:03:49
Maybe having a TA acting as a liaison can help
Na Zuo
02:04:24
Good observation, Byron. I agree. It reminds me the "Balance of Power" chapter in our FLC book reading this spring
Byron Hempel
02:05:40
@Na, What's the FLC book reading this Spring?
Byron Hempel
02:05:50
I forgot the title!
Jim Hunt
02:06:09
Student centered teaching by Werner
Byron Hempel
02:06:23
Thanks Jim!
Na Zuo
02:06:38
Yes, Jim. Learner-centered Teaching by Weimer. Thanks
Erin Galyen (she/her)
02:07:34
Great book and that's a particularly good chapter!
Linda Pallock
02:07:46
Do we have that in the library? I completely forgot to sign up for the FLC this semester
Fiona McCarthy
02:08:17
If the student is already intimidated, won't reaching out to them personally (as we are asked to do) only make the situation worse?
Byron Hempel
02:08:50
@Linda see if this link works: https://arizona-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primo-explore/fulldisplay?docid=TN_cdi_askewsholts_vlebooks_9781118419038&context=PC&vid=01UA&lang=en_US&search_scope=Everything&adaptor=primo_central_multiple_fe&tab=default_tab&query=any,contains,learner%20centered%20teaching,AND&sortby=rank&mode=advanced&offset=0
Adam Clark
02:08:56
@Fiona, I think that depends on your tone and how you approach that conversation.
Jeffrey Fehmi
02:08:58
I have the idea that the fear builds up over time so maybe reach out while the fear is still small?
Netzin Steklis
02:09:46
I think having professors with bad jokes helps
Linda Pallock
02:09:47
@Byron - Yes, the link worked. Thank You!!
